Don't Forget About Your Brakes

We all know that we should routinely have our oil changed and get our tires rotated, but what about your brakes? The brakes in your vehicle often go unchecked, and don't need to be replaced as often as the oil, but, they do require some work. If you drive in a lot of stop and go traffic, or if you tend to brake more often than most people, you may have to get them checked more often. Your brakes will also provide you with some warnings. If you notice any of the following signs, you should schedule a service appointment right away.

Here are some red flags that signal it's time to get your brakes checked.

  • An orange or red brake light appears on your dashboard.
  • You notice a burning or acidic smell after you've been braking for a while.
  • When you press the brake pedal your car shudders or vibrates.
  • A quiet squeal appears when you apply the brakes that continues to get louder as you drive.
  • As you brake you notice that the pedal goes down more than normal or feels kind of "spongy".
